Get the ball! １

“I want the Blues to win,” says Jenny.
She is talking to her friend Kerry.
Today there is a big soccer game. The Reds are playing the Blues.
Kerry and Jenny are watching the game. Kerry likes the Reds and Jenny likes the Blues.

Jenny’s boyfriend Alex plays for the Blues.
Kerry likes Anthony. He plays for the Reds.
“Come on, the Blues,” says Jenny. She wants the Blues to win.
“Come on, the Reds,” says Kerry.

It is a good game. Everybody wants the ball.
Alex is a good player. He takes the ball from Anthony.
Alex is very good,” says Jenny. “He’s okay,” says Kerry. She does not like the Blues.

Alex has the ball. He kicks it at the Reds’ goal. Alex scores a goal for the Blues!
The score is 1–0 to the Blues.
Jenny says, “Good goal, Alex!”
Kerry says nothing. Kerry is not happy.

(読んでいても、誰がどのチームで、誰がどのチームを好きかがわからなくなって、話の展開についていけなかったが、チームを色分けすることで、話の展開がよくわかるようになった）

King Donkey Ears３

That night, it was all Meg could think about.
She had to tell.
(I'm going to burst!)

At last, she had an idea.
She wouldn't tell anyone.

She'd tell a tree!
( The Kings got donkey ears! )

So she did. Now Meg felt much better.

Later, a woodcutter chopped down tree.

The tree became a harp.

One day, the king gave a huge concert.
But the new harp Played a very strange tune,

"You told my secret!"
the king roared at Meg.

The king's best friend came forward.
It's not a secret," he said.
"We all know"

"And you don't mind ?” asked the king.
"Of course not"

So the king freed all the servants.
And he learned to love his ears.

Meg saw the king's ears.
(Er. what lovely hair..）

She was shocked, but she didn't say.

As soon as Meg had finished, the King cried,
（off to jail!）

"But my mother is sick," said Meg.
"She needs me!'

The King thought of his own mother.

He didn't like putting people in jail.

"Okay," said the king,

Promise you’ll never tell anyone."

This story is about a king,
Meg, a servant,
the king's best friend,
a tree, a woodcutter and a harp.

There was once a king with a big secret.

He didn't even tell his best friend.

No one knew....
except the servant who cut his hair.

Every month, the King had a hair cut.
Snip!

Then he sent the servant to prison.
In July, it was Meg's turn.

Pinky and Percy ran as fast as he could to the brick house.
The wolf was just behind them.

“No!” cried Poppy pig.
“Not by the hair on my chinny-chen-chen.”

“Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff
and I’ll blow your house in,” said the wolf.

And he huff and he puff
and he huff and he puff.
He huff and he puff until……

……he run out of puff.
“Hee, hee, hee,” laughed the three little pigs.

“I’m coming to get you!” cried the wolf.
He jumped onto the roof.(こうして煙突から家の中に入ろうとする）

He slid down the chimney and landed
in Poppy’s cooking pot. “splosh”

slid ：slideの過去形･過去分詞.
slide：すべる, 滑走する, すべるように動く

chimney：煙突
splosh(splash)：パシャっと湯や水がはねる音

The three little pigs slammed on the lid.
And that was the end the Big Bad Wolf.

英語学習は単語学習から

　英語学習の参考書はたくさんある。学習の方法もまた、人によって様々な考えのもと文法、多読、音読など、様々な方法が提起されている。それぞれが大切であることは言うまでもないことだが、最も大切なことはとなると、意見が分かれるようである。
　それに対し、「外国語学習は単語学習から始まると言っても過言では」ないと書いているのは、『くらべて覚える英単語』の著者清水建二さんだ。「いくら難しい構文や文法的な知識があっても、単語がわからなければ、コミュニケーションをとることはでき」（p６）ないからである。なるほど、そうかもしれない。
　しかも、「英単語学習で重要なこと、それは単語の持つ本質的な意味（これをコアという）を理解すること」だという。そこで思い出したのが、「makeというのは、何かを満たす、充足する、果たすというのがその根本的な意味」（『国弘正雄自選集 ３』、国弘正雄著、日本英語教育協会、1982年、p263）である。このような理解だと、このような理解だと、確かに応用も効く。少しずつでも、単語学習を継続していきたいものである。

最後の行の直訳は「あごのひげ一本だってダメ（入れてやらない）」ということ。
chinny chin chinの部分は、英語らしい、リズムを整える意味でそうされている。日本語の意味合いとしては「あっかんべー」などが近いと、解説にはでていた。「ダメダメ、ダメ。～」という訳は、英語のリズム感をよく出している。（以上、ネット解説より）

huff：怒る　ハーハーと息を吐く
puff：息を吹く
blow：（風が）吹く

until at last he blow your house in.（ここで家が壊れてしまう）
