A few days later, a wolf DID come out of the forest.
Sam was terrified. He ran down to the village as fast as he could.

　please help!

Nobody believed him.

　I promise you, there's a wolf!

Sam begged them to come with him.

This time, they just laughed at him.

In the end, Sam had to go back up the hill all alone.
The wolf had killed some of the sheep.
The rest had run away.

Finally, the villagers came to find him.

"Why didn't you believe me?” he asked.

　We'd better make sure.
But most ran up the hill to see.

Puffing and panting, they reached the meadow.
Of course, there was no wolf.
The sheep were quietly eating the grass.
　What are you grinning at.
Everyone was very angry, but sam just laughed.

A week later, Sam was bored again.
He ran down the hill to the village.
　Help Help!
　There really is a wolf!
　come quickly!
Most people didn't belive him this time,

The sheep were quietly eating the grass.

New everyone was furious. Sam laughed and laughed.

But they didn't have much to say.

"Nobody ever comes up here,” moaned Sam.
"Nothing ever happens.”
One day, he had an idea.
　I could make something happen.

Everyone ran up the hill with him.
　Harry!
　My sheep!

　All that way, for nothing.
The sheep were quietly eating the grass.

The villagers were angry, but sam just laughed.

This story is about Sam, some sheep, the villagers and (maybe) a wolf.

Sam lived in a little village in the mountains.

Every day he took the sheep from the village up
the hill to a grassy meadow.
　　Here we are again.

He watched them from morning until evening.
　　This way, mutton brain...
Then he took them home again. 

Every day was the same.
　 Same old mountains, same old trees
Sam was lonely and he was so bored.
All his friends were down in the village.

英文音読と暗誦の勧め

　音読が脳の活性化のためにもいいことはわかっていた。英語の英文音読も、黙読よりも脳の活動が活発になることが確かめられているという。画像で示されているのだから、納得できる。口を動かしたり声を出したり、黙読よりも体を余計に使うのだから、少し考えれば、当然と言えば当然のことでもある。

　しかし、『からだを揺さぶる英語入門』で注目した点は、日本なまりの英文朗読（スピーチ）があってもいいのではないか、という提案である。日本語の方言だって、ひどく訛ってわからないことさえあるのだから、発音を気にするよりも、読みながら英文を理解できるようになることの方が重要かもしれない。

　もう一つ挙げるとすれば、「尺取り虫のように、少しずつ少しずつ進みながら徐々に距離を延ばしていく」暗誦方法だ。これは素晴らしい。リーディングにも、音読にも、この方式を活用し、一歩一歩、歩んでいけばいい。

　この本の主旨は、ネイティブのような英語で朗読しようということではない。
　まずは、からだがムズムズと動きだし、英語を声に出して読むことの気持ちよさを実感しようということだ。英語の上達のために朗読が必要だと考えるだけではなく、世の中のいろいろな楽しみの一つに、英語を朗読することの楽しみを加えたい。
　これはすでに英語を朗読することの楽しみを身にしみて感じている人には当たり前もしれないが、私自身は受験勉強も含めて英語を長い期間勉強しこの楽しみを知らずに多くの時間を過ごしてきた。
　まずは、日本人っぼい英語であることを恐れずに声を出してみる。そうして割り切ってみると、意外と英語を読み上げるのは苦にならない。
　アジアの国々では、それぞれの国のなまりの強い英語を堂々と話している。（中略）、「日本人なまりの英語」というものも存在しても構わないのではないか。（『からだを揺さぶる英語入門』、齋藤孝著、角川書店、2003年、p30〜31）

　自転車に完全に乗れるようになってしまえば、一生乗ることができる。いい加減なところで練習をやめてしまえば、一生乗ることがきない。これが、技というものの論理だ。
　暗誦は、自転車を完全に乗れるようになるということだ。その言葉が自分のからだの中に入り、自分の一部となる。すると、ただ知っているとか聞いたことがあるという次元とはまったく違う効果を発揮するようになる。それも一時的な効果ではなく、生涯にわたって、自分の中の鏡となり道しるべとなってくれるのである。
　暗誦には、尺取り虫方式が適している。少しずつ区切って復誦し、覚えていく。少し慣れてきたら、長めの文章を暗誦するようにする。尺取り虫のように、少しずつ少しずつ進みながら徐々に距離を延ばしていくのでる。これは、能の謡や狂言など、日本の伝統的な芸能の基本的な練習方法でもある。（上同、120）

He picked up some scissors.
Then he snipped open the wolf's tummy.

Snip, snip... He saw a bright red hood.
Snip, snip...Little Red Riding Hood’s head popped out.
　　　Phew!

"Keep cutting!" she cried.
“Grandmother's still in there."

Snippety-snip, faster and faster... The woodcutter kept
cutting until Grandmother popped out too.
   Did I fall asleep?

Quick as a flash, Little Red Riding Hood ran outside and
picked up lots of stones.

The woodcutter put them in the wolf's tummy
and the grandmother sewed the tummy up.

Then the wolf woke up.
He tried to sneak out of the door, but the stones rattled
inside him.

"Now everyone can hear you coming," said the
woodcutter, laughing.（ガタガタと音音がするので）

“But I'll never catch anyone,” cried the wolf.

“Exactly!” said the woodcutter.

“You'll just have to eat vegetables instead," said
Little Red Riding Hood.

The wolf never ate another person.
　　I don't like little girls!

As for Little Red Riding Hood, she never,
ever talked to a wolf again.

He jumped out of bed and gobbled up Little Red Riding Hood.

“Full at last!” he said, licking his lips.
Then he lay down on the bed to sleep.

As the wolf slept, he snored... very loudly.

He snored so loudly the woodcutter heard him.
“I’ve never heard the old woman snore that loudly,” he thought.

“I'll just make sure she's okay.”

But the woodcutter couldn't
see the grandmother anywhere
– only a very fat wolf.
