英語の学習方針を大きく変えることにした。英語の短文を音読し、暗記していくのだが、次の通りである。
「英語を読み上げよう。読み上げるのは短文(単語数の少ないセンテンス)がよい。短文トレーーングをすると、自然に長文を読んだり、書いたりできるようになる。
とにかく、短文をたくさん読み上げよう。読み上げ用の短文をたくさん用意しておいて、毎日、それを読み上げる。長文トレーーングをしてはいけない。長文を読んでいると、英語に対して「暗号解読」のような姿勢で接することになってしまうからだ。英語は暗号ではありませんから、そのような接し方は、間違いなのだ。とにかく、英文のトレーニングは、短文に限る」(『13歳からの勉強ノート 必ず成績が良くなる40のルール』、小野田博一著、PHPエディターズ・グループ、2009年、要約)。
毎日少しでも、英語を学んでいく。当面は、文法の学習をしながら、とにかく多く読むことを目標とする。 「読む力を直接に育てるのはただ一つ、とにかく読み続けていくということしかない。(中略)そして、多く読むほどに次からのスピードがだんだん早くなる(『独学術』、白取晴彦著、p139〜140)。

“But I didn’t do those things,” says Ji-Sung. “Maybe,” says another police officer. “But you were with these other boys. And you didn’t stop them. You didn’t call the police. You’re coming with us to the police station.”
“Wait. Please listen,” says Ji-Sung. “I’m sorry.”
“Not now,” says the police officer. “We’ll ask your parents to come to the police station. You can tell us about it then.”

Scott gets some more bottles and

辞書を丁寧に引きましょう
多読を勧めているの本を読むと、辞書はなるべく使わないという本が多い。しかし、辞書を丁寧に引くことを進めている参考書も多い。「文脈に最も適合する意味を辞書の情報のなかから見つけ出し」、ながら読み進めるというのは、確かに、時間がかかっても大切なのかもしれない。
独習者の一番の助っ人は何と言っても辞書です。少々時間がかかっても、手間がかかっても、やはり辞書を頼りに読み進むべきでしょう。辞書は丁寧に調べます。
たとえば、語の意味だけ調べて終わりにしないで、例文まで見れば、その語のニュアンスが明確に把握できることがあります。熟語欄も大切です。辞書をひきながら、 その語の前後の文章を読み返してください。そして、その文脈に最も適合する意味を辞書の情報のなかから見つけ出してください。
最も適切な意味を拾い出すという作業は時間のかかる地味な作業です。しかしこれを繰り返すことを通じて、実はみなさんは英語以外にも通じる重要な力を磨いているのです。それは文章の流れを追う力、文脈を抑える力です。これは、英語に限らず、 日本語でも、文章を読むときに欠くことのできない力です。英語の文章とゆっくり付き合うなかで、この力を養ってください。(『英語〈A〉』、山本恭子著、中央大学通信教育部、p5〜6)

英文音読と暗誦の勧め
この本の主旨は、ネイティブのような英語で朗読しようということではない。
まずは、からだがムズムズと動きだし、英語を声に出して読むことの気持ちよさを実感しようということだ。英語の上達のために朗読が必要だと考えるだけではなく、世の中のいろいろな楽しみの一つに、英語を朗読することの楽しみを加えたい。
これはすでに英語を朗読することの楽しみを身にしみて感じている人には当たり前もしれないが、私自身は受験勉強も含めて英語を長い期間勉強しこの楽しみを知らずに多くの時間を過ごしてきた。
まずは、日本人っぼい英語であることを恐れずに声を出してみる。そうして割り切ってみると、意外と英語を読み上げるのは苦にならない。
アジアの国々では、それぞれの国のなまりの強い英語を堂々と話している。(中略)、「日本人なまりの英語」というものも存在しても構わないのではないか。(『からだを揺さぶる英語入門』、齋藤孝著、角川書店、2003年、p30〜31)
自転車に完全に乗れるようになってしまえば、一生乗ることができる。いい加減なところで練習をやめてしまえば、一生乗ることがきない。これが、技というものの論理だ。
暗誦は、自転車を完全に乗れるようになるということだ。その言葉が自分のからだの中に入り、自分の一部となる。すると、ただ知っているとか聞いたことがあるという次元とはまったく違う効果を発揮するようになる。それも一時的な効果ではなく、生涯にわたって、自分の中の鏡となり道しるべとなってくれるのである。
暗誦には、尺取り虫方式が適している。少しずつ区切って復誦し、覚えていく。少し慣れてきたら、長めの文章を暗誦するようにする。尺取り虫のように、少しずつ少しずつ進みながら徐々に距離を延ばしていくのでる。これは、能の謡や狂言など、日本の伝統的な芸能の基本的な練習方法でもある。(上同、120)

He tried to sneak out of the door, but the stones rattled
inside him.
